Sage 50 Quantum Downgrade: Canadian Edition (Simply Accounting)
For Canadian Sage 50 Quantum users on the Simply Accounting lineage: we convert the .SAI/.SAJ company down so Pro or Premium opens it normally.
Who this page is for
You run Sage 50 Quantum on the Canadian Edition – the product that grew out of Simply Accounting – and you want to run Sage 50 Pro or Sage 50 Premium going forward. The seats you bought Quantum for aren’t needed any more, or you’ve taken on a Quantum company file and only have a lower edition to open it in.
Sage stamps the company with the edition that created it and refuses to open it in anything lower. The file has to be converted down first. That’s this service.
If your Sage backups end in .PTB, you’re on the US product instead – see the US Edition Quantum downgrade.
Which product this covers
The Canadian line’s names over the years, all of which land here:
- Simply Accounting – and Simply Accounting by Sage.
- Sage Simply Accounting – including the Premium and Enterprise tiers.
- Sage 50 Accounting – Canadian Edition – Pro, Premium and Quantum, the current naming.
The tell is the file shape. A Canadian company is a .SAI file plus a matching .SAJ folder of the same name, and a Sage backup comes out as a .CAB file. That’s a genuinely different product from the US one under a shared brand – different data engine, different tax handling, different terminology. If you’re not sure which you’re on, our guide on Sage 50 US vs Canadian settles it in a minute.
Why Pro and Premium refuse to open the file
The company remembers the edition that last opened it. Quantum can do things the lower editions can’t guarantee, so Sage blocks the file rather than open it and risk damage, with a message along the lines of:
This company cannot be opened with Sage 50 Premium Accounting because it is from Sage 50 Quantum Accounting.
It isn’t corruption, and there’s no setting or workaround that clears it. The data has to be rebuilt into a file the lower edition will accept. More detail in Sage 50 edition-mismatch errors, explained.
What you get back
A Sage 50 Pro or Premium company (.SAI + .SAJ) that opens normally, with your data in place:
- Chart of accounts, with your account numbering and linked accounts
- Customers, vendors, employees and inventory
- Transaction history – sales invoices, purchase invoices, payments, receipts, general journal entries
- Open receivables and payables
- General ledger history for prior-period reporting
- Sales tax codes as configured – GST/HST, and provincial PST, RST or QST
- Payroll records and history where the company runs payroll
Nothing is summarised or truncated to fit the smaller edition.
Canadian specifics worth flagging before you commit
Multi-currency. Foreign-currency setups are far more common on Canadian files than US ones, and multi-currency is not available across every Canadian tier – Pro is unlikely to be a viable target for a multi-currency company, and Premium is usually the right landing spot. We check this during the evaluation and tell you before you’re quoted, rather than after delivery. If you also plan to move to QuickBooks later, read the multi-currency note on the Sage 50 to QuickBooks page – it changes how that conversion is done.
Payroll. Payroll calculation depends on an active Sage plan on the installation you run, with the CRA tax tables it downloads – and Revenu Quebec’s if you’re in Quebec. The downgrade doesn’t touch your plan and doesn’t alter your payroll history, T4 or RL-1 figures. Before you move, confirm with Sage that your plan covers the edition you’re landing on.
Language. If the company was set up through the French interface, say so. It doesn’t stop the job, but we want to know before we open the file rather than after.
Departments and account structure. Canadian files often carry departmental account structures and per-period budgets. Tell us if yours does, and we’ll confirm during the evaluation that the target edition supports what you’re actually using.
What changes when you drop from Quantum
Simultaneous users. Pro is single-user. Premium covers a small workgroup. Quantum is the higher-seat tier above it – and the seat maximums on the Canadian line are not the same as the US line, so don’t size your target edition from a US comparison chart. Pick against how many people need to be in the company at the same time, and we’ll confirm the edition fits.
Quantum-only capability. Role-based security and the heavier multi-user administration are Quantum’s. If you’ve never configured them, you won’t miss them; if your team relies on them, a downgrade is the wrong move and we’ll tell you that instead of taking the job.
What to have ready
The Canadian pre-flight list:
- A Sage backup (
.CAB) made from inside Sage – File > Backup. That’s one file and it’s always internally consistent. - If you send the raw company instead, send the
.SAIfile and the entire.SAJfolder together, zipped, with Sage closed. The.SAJfolder is where your data actually lives – a.SAIon its own is not your company, and a.SAJcopied while Sage is open can be mid-write. - Everyone out of the company, taken in single-user mode.
- Your version and release – Help > About Sage 50 Accounting. Give us the release number, not just the year.
- File statistics – a screenshot of the file’s size and history counts. See where to find your file statistics.
- Your target edition – Pro or Premium – and how many people need simultaneous access.
- Whether multi-currency is on, your home currency, and which foreign currencies are in use.
- Whether the company runs payroll, and whether you’re in Quebec.
- Remote Data Access. If the company is shared that way, stop sharing and take the backup on the machine holding the source data.
How the job runs
- Free evaluation. Send your version, file statistics and target edition. No charge, no obligation.
- Flat quote. A firm fee based on what the file actually is – size and history. If a downgrade is the wrong answer, this is where we say so.
- Secure upload. A private upload link for the
.CABbackup. Nothing travels over ordinary email. - Conversion and verification. We convert the company down to your target edition and check it opens cleanly and reports correctly against the original.
- Delivery. The converted company comes back to you. Standard turnaround is two business days, with expedited service when you’re against a deadline.
We work from the backup you send, so your original is never modified.
When a downgrade isn’t the right answer
- You use the seats or the Quantum features. Then stay on Quantum – we’ll tell you if that’s what the evaluation shows.
- You’re leaving Sage entirely. If QuickBooks is the destination rather than a cheaper Sage tier, go straight to Sage 50 to QuickBooks conversion. There’s no reason to downgrade first.
- The company won’t open in Quantum either. That’s file damage rather than an edition mismatch – a repair job first. Send us the details and we’ll look.
Common situations we see
- Seats bought for a crew that’s since shrunk, with Premium now covering everyone who logs in.
- An acquired company’s file arriving as Quantum while your own office runs Premium.
- A bookkeeping practice taking on a client whose file is a tier above the practice’s own licence.
- One legacy Quantum company being the only reason the higher edition is still being paid for.
