Payroll stopped calculating? Slips and forms that have to be right and filed on time?
The situation
Payroll in Sage 50 has a habit of stopping at the worst possible moment. It quietly drops to manual entry - you are suddenly keying tax, CPP/EI or Social Security/Medicare by hand - or it refuses to calculate at all. Then there is the seasonal version: year-end slips and forms that have to reconcile to the register and be accepted by the tax authority, on a deadline.
Both are deadline-driven and both are unforgiving, which is why they are worth getting help with rather than fighting alone at 11pm before a pay run or a filing date.
Payroll that stopped calculating
The most common cause is a lapsed payroll subscription. Sage 50’s tax tables carry a validity window, and once it passes without a current plan the program warns that the formulas are only valid up to a past date and drops to manual entry. On the US side you may be told plainly that the subscription has expired and you cannot save or print payroll checks.
The other causes are more technical: a payroll update that did not land so the current tax table is missing, a filing status or state/locality that is not in the tables after a move or upgrade, or a payroll formula that references a field that no longer exists - which can silently corrupt amounts before it ever shows an error.

Year-end slips and forms
- Sage 50 US: W-2s and 941s that have to tie to the payroll register, Box 12/14 handling, missing state tax tables, and e-file rejections.
- Sage 50 Canadian: T4, T4A, Quebec RL-1 and Records of Employment (ROE), the CRA and Revenu Quebec e-files, and the summary totals that have to reconcile before any of it is accepted.

A note on what we do and do not touch
