Sage 50: "cannot remove this foreign currency because transactions have been processed
Sage 50 blocks deleting a currency code once any transaction, customer, or vendor has used it, because the history depends on it.
This message appears when you try to delete a foreign currency from your Sage 50 company file and the program stops you: “You cannot remove this foreign currency because transactions have been processed that use it.” Despite the wording, nothing is wrong with the currency or with your file. Sage 50 is simply refusing to delete the currency code because at least one posted transaction was recorded in it, and removing the code would leave those records pointing at a currency that no longer exists.
Why Sage 50 refuses
In a multicurrency company, every transaction entered in a foreign currency is tied to that currency’s code and, usually, to the exchange rate in effect when it posted. Reports, reconciliations, and your financial history all depend on those links. Once even one such transaction exists, the currency is part of your books, and Sage 50 has no command that will unlink it. Depending on the file, a voided or long-reversed entry can be enough to keep the currency locked, and so can a customer, vendor, or account that is still assigned to it.
Safest option: leave it in place
An unused currency sitting in the list does no harm. It posts nothing, it does not appear on reports that do not use it, and it does not meaningfully affect the file. If your goal was tidiness, the safest action is no action. If you try anything else, take a fresh backup of the company file first.
Check what still points at the currency
Before assuming years of history are the blocker, look for records still assigned to that currency: customers, vendors, recurring templates, price levels, or accounts denominated in it. Retiring or reassigning one forgotten record sometimes clears the way. One caution: you generally cannot switch the currency of a customer or vendor that already has transactions. The usual practice is to inactivate the old record and create a new one in the correct currency, so the history stays intact.
If the currency truly has to go
There is no supported way in Sage 50 to delete a currency that has transactions behind it. Removing one means editing the company data directly, and doing that by hand risks breaking the transaction history and exchange-rate records that depend on it. This is a case where the file needs professional attention: our engineers remove unused foreign currencies from Sage 50 files as a data service, and whether the job is straightforward depends entirely on what the file contains.
If this is in the way of a move to QuickBooks
Multicurrency is one of the decisions that shapes a Sage 50 to QuickBooks conversion: the destination can keep multicurrency or collapse everything to your home currency, and which is better depends on the QuickBooks edition you are moving to and how much foreign-currency history you need day to day. The stuck currency does not have to be solved first; it can be handled as part of the conversion itself.
Next step
Make a backup, then send us the file for a free evaluation. We will tell you exactly which transactions are holding the currency, what removal or conversion would involve, and quote the work before anything is touched.
