The Student Version cannot open company files from earlier versions of Simply Accounting
The Student Version of Simply Accounting refuses older company files because it only reads files from its own release.
You are seeing this message:
The Student Version cannot open company files from earlier versions of Simply Accounting.
In plain terms, the copy of Simply Accounting you are running is the Student Version, and it will not open a company file that was created in an older release of the program. The file itself is probably fine. The Student Version is built to work with course materials for its own edition, and it deliberately blocks files from earlier versions rather than converting them.
Why the Student Version does this
The full commercial editions of Simply Accounting (now sold as Sage 50 Canada) upgrade an older company file when you first open it. The Student Version does not include that upgrade path. It expects files made for the current course release and nothing else.
This is a licensing limitation, not a data problem. The software is telling you it lacks the conversion capability, not that your file is damaged or corrupt.
Open the file in a matching full edition
The safest fix is to open the file in a full, licensed copy of Simply Accounting or Sage 50 Canada that is the same version as or newer than the file. The full product will convert the file forward, and it can then be used normally.
If you only have the Student Version because you are taking a course, ask whether the course materials include a matching file. Working from the supplied file avoids the version mismatch entirely.
Move the data to QuickBooks instead
If the goal is to keep the books going and you would rather leave Simply Accounting behind, the file can be converted to QuickBooks. Our engineers convert Simply Accounting and Sage 50 Canada company files to QuickBooks regularly, and the older the source file, the more this is worth considering rather than chasing down an old installer. See our Simply Accounting to QuickBooks conversion service for what carries over.
If the file itself may be damaged
A small number of people see this message because the file is not just old, it is also damaged, and the Student Version reports the version problem first. If a full edition also refuses the file, or it opens with missing or garbled data, that points to real damage. Our Simply Accounting database repair service handles those cases.
