The program can no longer find your data and could not finish converting it

Sage 50 says it lost track of your company data mid-upgrade, which usually means the file is damaged or the conversion failed partway.

You see this message at the end of a version upgrade or data conversion, and it means the process failed partway through. Sage 50 upgraded the program but could not complete the move of your company data into the new format. In plain terms, the software lost its place in the file. The data is often still on the drive, but the conversion cannot finish on its own.

What the message actually means

The wording suggests your data vanished. It almost never has. What usually happens is that the conversion hit a damaged or unreadable section inside the company file and stopped. The new version then cannot locate the partially converted result, so it reports that the data is missing.

A second possibility is simpler: the conversion was interrupted. A power loss, a forced restart, a network drop, or closing the program too early can leave the file half-converted and unopenable in either version.

Stop and make a copy before anything else

Do not retry the conversion repeatedly. Each attempt works on the same fragile file, and a repeated failed conversion can make recovery harder.

Find the original company file and any backup from before the upgrade, and copy them somewhere safe, away from the Sage data folder. Work only on copies from this point on. If you are not sure which files matter, that depends on your setup and version, and we can tell you during a free evaluation.

Try the pre-upgrade backup

If you have a backup made in the old version before you started, restore it on a machine still running that old version, confirm the books open and look right, and then attempt the upgrade again with antivirus and other programs closed. This is the cleanest path, and it succeeds whenever the backup predates the damage.

If the backup also fails to convert, the damage is older than the upgrade, and the file needs professional attention.

When the file needs repair

If there is no usable backup, or every backup fails the same way, the company file itself is damaged. No setting or reinstall fixes that. Sage 50 does not include a repair tool for this kind of failure, and reinstalling the software will not touch the data problem.

Our engineers recover data from failed Sage 50 conversions regularly, including files that will not open in any version. We work from the copy you send us, and the cost and turnaround depend on the file, so we quote both for free after looking at it. See our Sage 50 database repair service for what that involves.

If you were converting to QuickBooks instead

The same message can appear during a Sage-to-QuickBooks conversion, and the meaning is the same: the source data hit a problem mid-transfer. Repairing or extracting the Sage data first is the reliable route. Our Sage 50 to QuickBooks conversion service handles damaged sources as part of the process.

A useful next step
