Sage 50 error: currency code cannot be changed on a linked account
Sage 50 blocks the change because a module is posting to that account automatically; unlink it first or create a new account.
“The currency code for this account cannot be changed while it is being used as a linked account.” You hit this while editing a general ledger account and trying to change its currency code. Sage 50 (formerly Peachtree in the US and Simply Accounting in Canada) is not saying the account is damaged. It is saying one of its modules is currently set to post to that account automatically, and it refuses a currency change while that link is in place. It only comes up in companies where more than one currency is in use, since single-currency companies have no currency code to change.
What a linked account actually is
A linked account is a G/L account that a module posts to without anyone choosing it each time: the receivables and payables accounts, payroll accounts, sales tax accounts, inventory accounts, and similar. These links live in the module settings, not on the account itself, which is why the block can feel like it comes from nowhere. The account looks perfectly ordinary in the chart of accounts, but behind the scenes a module claims it.
Find the link first
Before changing anything, work out which module is using the account. Go through the settings area where Sage 50 stores each module’s linked accounts and look for the account you were trying to edit. Note every place it appears, because an account can serve as a link in more than one module.
Unlink, change, relink
Once you know the link, the direct fix is to clear it, or point the module at a different account temporarily, save your changes, edit the account’s currency code, then restore the link. Two things can still stop you. If the account already has transactions posted in its current currency, the program will generally refuse the change regardless of the link. And if the link cannot be cleared at all, the settings data may be damaged rather than merely configured. In both situations the next option is usually the better one.
Create a new account instead
Often the cleanest route is to leave the old account alone: create a new account with the correct currency code, move the module’s linked-account setting to the new account, and let the old account keep its history. This preserves existing balances and the audit trail, and it avoids a fight over an account that already has postings attached to it.
If the link will not clear
When an account shows as linked but the link cannot be found or removed anywhere in the settings, the file’s settings data is suspect. Our engineers see this in files that have been through interrupted updates or unexpected shutdowns, and it is something we can check as part of a database repair evaluation.
If this came up during a conversion
Currency setup is one of the details that has to be mapped when moving a Sage 50 company to QuickBooks, and accounts caught mid-change are a common source of confusion in that move. Our Sage 50 to QuickBooks conversion page covers what carries over, and there is a separate page for the Canadian edition.
If the link will not clear, or the currency change keeps failing after the account is unlinked, send us the file for a free evaluation and quote. The right fix depends on what the settings data looks like, and finding out costs nothing.
