The company you are trying to convert is unreadable or corrupt" Sage 50 error

The conversion tool cannot read your Sage 50 company file, usually because the file is damaged or incomplete rather than truly lost.

You are seeing this message during a conversion, most likely moving your Sage 50 data to QuickBooks:

The company you are trying to convert is unreadable or corrupt.

In plain language, the conversion tool opened your company file and could not make sense of what it found. It does not mean your data is gone. It means the reader gave up partway through, and something inside the file is broken, truncated, or inconsistent enough to stop the process.

What the message actually means

A conversion reads the company file from end to end: lists, transactions, balances, and the internal structures that tie them together. If any critical section is damaged, or if the file was copied while Sage 50 was still writing to it, the reader hits a wall and reports the whole file as unreadable.

Two things are worth separating. The file may be genuinely damaged. Or the file may be fine and the copy you handed the converter is not: an incomplete transfer, a backup that did not finish restoring, or a file still locked by another process. The message does not tell you which.

Check the copy first

Before assuming damage, work through the simple causes. Make a fresh copy of the company file while Sage 50 is closed on every machine. Open that copy directly in Sage 50 on the same computer. If Sage 50 opens it and the totals look right, the original file is healthy and the problem is in the copy or the transfer. Convert from the fresh copy.

If you are converting from a backup, restore it in Sage 50 first and confirm it opens cleanly. A backup that restores with errors will not convert cleanly either.

If Sage 50 cannot open it either

Here the news is less convenient. If Sage 50 itself refuses the file, or opens it with errors, missing transactions, or unbalanced accounts, the file is damaged and no conversion setting will fix that. The converter is downstream of the damage; repair has to come first.

Do not keep retrying the conversion on a damaged file. Repeated attempts do not repair anything, and if the underlying storage is failing, every read adds risk. Stop, keep the file exactly as it is, and work from a copy.

Repair before converting

Our engineers repair damaged Sage 50 (Peachtree and Simply Accounting) databases and then run the conversion from the repaired data. If you are moving to QuickBooks, see our Sage 50 to QuickBooks conversion service for the US edition or our Sage 50 Canada conversion service for Simply Accounting files. If the file simply needs to be made readable again, our Sage 50 database repair service covers exactly this situation.

A useful next step

Send us the file for a free evaluation before you spend more time on it. We will tell you what is wrong, whether the data is recoverable, and what a repair-and-convert would involve, with no obligation. The answer depends entirely on the file, so we look at it rather than guess.
