Sage 50 "Hold Over Limit" credit status blocks saving a transaction
Sage 50 is refusing to save because the customer's balance already exceeds their credit limit and their status is set to Hold Over Limit.
Sage 50 has stopped you mid-entry, and the wording is doing double duty. The message reads:
Since their credit status has been set to Hold Over Limit, you cannot save a transaction that increases the customer’s balance unless you change the customer’s credit status or increase their credit limit.
In plain terms, this customer already owes more than the credit limit you set for them, and someone (or an automatic credit check) has flagged their account. Sage 50 will not let you post anything that pushes the balance higher. It is a deliberate block, not a glitch, and your unsaved transaction is still sitting on screen.
What the message actually means
“Hold Over Limit” is a credit-control status. When a customer’s outstanding balance passes their credit limit, Sage 50 can place the account on hold so no further charges accumulate. The block only applies to transactions that increase what the customer owes. An invoice, a sale on credit, or a finance charge will trip it. A receipt or a credit memo that reduces the balance will usually go through fine.
Check the customer’s balance and limit first
Before changing anything, look at the two numbers involved: the current balance and the credit limit on the customer’s record. If the balance genuinely exceeds the limit, the software is doing exactly what it was configured to do. The question is a business one: does this customer deserve more credit?
Record a payment instead
Often the cleanest fix is not to touch the credit settings at all. Apply the customer’s outstanding payment or receipt first. Once the balance drops back under the limit, the hold stops blocking new transactions, and you can save your entry normally. This keeps your credit controls intact and your ageing accurate.
Raise the credit limit
If you have decided the customer can carry more, increase the credit limit on their customer record above the current balance. The exact location of the field depends on your Sage 50 edition and version, so check your release rather than hunting for a menu path we cannot confirm. Once the limit exceeds the balance, the transaction should save.
Change the credit status
The other route the message names is changing the status itself. If the hold was set manually, or the situation has been resolved, clearing the hold status on the customer record will lift the block. Be careful here: if the status was set automatically by a credit-check rule, it may simply be re-applied the next time the system evaluates the account. Fixing the balance or the limit is usually more durable than overriding the status.
When it keeps happening
If the hold reappears, or the balance and limit do not seem to add up to what the message claims, the customer record itself may be damaged. Discrepancies between the displayed balance and the underlying ledger are a known symptom of a stressed data file.
