Simply Accounting "Internet access is required for this command
The message means Sage 50 needs an online connection to validate your licence or sync cloud data, not that your file is damaged.
When Simply Accounting (now Sage 50 Canada) shows “Internet access is required for this command,” the program is trying to reach a Sage server and cannot. Despite the word “command,” the issue is almost always connectivity or licence validation, not a problem inside your company file itself.
What the message actually means
Sage 50 periodically contacts Sage’s servers to confirm that your subscription or licence is active, to download payroll tax updates, or to synchronize data if you use a cloud-connected setup. When that check fails because there is no working internet connection, a firewall is blocking the request, or Sage’s servers are temporarily unreachable, the program refuses to proceed and surfaces this message.
Check your connection first
Before assuming the worst, confirm the computer has a live internet connection. Open a browser and load any website. If pages fail to load, resolve the underlying connection issue (restart the router, check the network cable, reconnect to Wi-Fi) and then retry the command in Sage 50.
Check firewall and antivirus settings
Security software can block Sage 50 from reaching the internet even when everything else works. If your browser loads pages fine but Sage still shows the message, your firewall or antivirus suite may be filtering or denying the connection. Temporarily disabling the firewall or adding Sage 50 to the allowed-apps list can confirm whether that is the cause. Re-enable protection immediately after testing.
Consider whether Sage’s servers are down
On rare occasions the problem is on Sage’s end: a server outage or scheduled maintenance window can produce the same message for every user. If your connection is solid and your firewall is not the culprit, waiting an hour and retrying is a reasonable next step.
When the message persists or appears alongside file problems
If you have confirmed connectivity and the message still appears every time you try to open or work in your company file, the licence-check loop may be interacting with a damaged or inconsistent data file. In that situation the file itself may need professional evaluation. Our engineers regularly repair damaged Sage 50 and Simply Accounting databases, and if you are considering moving away from Sage 50 entirely, we also handle Simply Accounting to QuickBooks conversions.
Next step
If the message is purely a connectivity issue, it will clear once the connection is restored. If it persists after you have ruled out your network and firewall, send us your file for a free evaluation and we will tell you whether the problem is in the data, the licence state, or something else entirely.
