No more space for the export file - disk out of room" in Sage 50
Sage 50 is trying to write an export file and the destination drive does not have enough free space to hold it.
You are seeing this message:
No more space for the export file - disk out of room.
Despite the wording, this is almost never a problem inside your Sage 50 data. It means the drive Sage 50 is writing the export file to has filled up partway through the write, so the export was abandoned. Your company data itself is usually untouched; the output file is simply incomplete or missing.
Why it happens
An export has to build the entire output file before it is finished. If the free space on the destination drive runs out before the export completes, Sage 50 stops and shows this message. Common situations:
- Exporting to a drive that is nearly full, or to a small USB stick or older flash drive.
- Exporting a large company to a location on a network share or mapped drive with a quota.
- A previous failed export left a partial file behind, consuming space on top of what was already there.
- The destination is the same drive as your Sage 50 installation and temporary files, and it was already close to full.
Exports of large companies can also be surprisingly big, so a drive that looks like it has room may not have enough once the file is fully written.
Free up space on the destination drive
Start by checking how much free space is on the drive you are exporting to, and clear some room: empty the recycle bin, remove old partial export files from earlier attempts, and move unrelated large files elsewhere. If you are exporting to a USB stick or memory card, switch to a local hard drive with generous free space instead.
Choose a different destination
Point the export at a drive with plenty of room, ideally a local internal drive rather than a network share or removable media. If you were exporting across a network, try exporting locally first and copying the file afterwards. Also delete any leftover partial output from the failed attempt before trying again, so the new export starts clean.
Check the size before you export
If you can, estimate how large the export will be and compare it against free space. A useful habit is to keep several times the expected file size free on the destination drive, because temporary working files can add to the footprint during the export. If the drive is a small partition or an almost-full system drive, that is often the real culprit.
If the export is part of a conversion
This message often appears when someone is exporting Sage 50 data on the way to converting it to QuickBooks. If space is tight on the machine, or the export keeps failing even after freeing room, the conversion can be handled for you instead: our engineers run Sage 50 to QuickBooks conversions (US Peachtree editions) and Sage 50 Canada / Simply Accounting conversions directly from your data, without depending on a successful export on your end.
If it keeps happening
If you have confirmed ample free space on a healthy local drive and the message still appears, the drive may be failing or the file system may be misreporting space, or something specific to your company file is inflating the export. At that point it is worth having the file looked at professionally rather than continuing to retry. We offer a free evaluation of Sage 50 company files, including damaged Sage 50 / Simply Accounting databases, and we can tell you quickly whether the problem is the drive, the export settings, or the data itself.
