Sage 50 "Error during read of Form File: File is corrupted

Sage 50 cannot read one of the form files attached to your company data, usually because that form file is damaged.

The message “Error during read of Form File: File is corrupted” means Sage 50 tried to load a form file, an invoice, check, or statement layout, and could not read it. The form layout itself is damaged. In most cases your accounting data is fine; it is the printed-form template that has gone bad.

What a form file is

Sage 50 keeps its data and its printed layouts separately. Your chart of accounts, customers, and transactions live in the company database. The look of an invoice or check, the logo, the field positions, the fonts, lives in form files. When you open or print a form, Sage 50 reads that layout file first. If the read fails, you get this message.

Restore from backup first

The safest fix is to replace the damaged form with a known good copy. If you have a recent backup of your company, restore it to a new folder and check whether the forms open from there. If they do, you can reuse the restored layouts. Do not overwrite your live company while testing; restore to a separate location so nothing is lost if the backup itself has problems.

Try selecting a different form

If the error appears only when printing or previewing one specific layout, switch the form selection to a standard Sage 50 form and print a test page. If the standard form works, the problem is confined to the custom layout. Rebuilding a custom layout by hand is tedious but possible, and it is often faster than repairing the file.

Check whether the company data is also affected

Open the company and run through your usual tasks without printing. If everything else behaves, the damage is limited to the form file and your books are likely intact. If Sage 50 also crashes, reports odd balances, or refuses to open the company, the underlying database may be damaged too. That changes the picture considerably.

When the file needs professional attention

If no backup holds a good copy of the form, or the company data itself shows signs of damage, the file needs professional repair. Our engineers work with damaged Sage 50 and Simply Accounting databases regularly, and we can evaluate the file and tell you what is recoverable before anything is done. See our Sage 50 database repair service for what that involves, or contact us about your specific file for a free evaluation and quote.

A useful next step

Before anything else, make a copy of the entire company folder, including all form files, and set it aside. Work only on the copy. That preserves the damaged file exactly as it is, which gives any repair effort, ours or your own, the best chance of recovering the layouts and the data behind them.
