Sage 50 "Data from a different country cannot be imported

Sage 50 refuses an import because the data belongs to another country edition than the company receiving it.

The message “Data from a different country cannot be imported” appears when you try to import data into a Sage 50 company and Sage 50 decides the data on hand belongs to a different country edition. Sage 50 is sold in country-specific editions, and the US, Canadian, and other editions are not just different settings. They use different data structures, tax models, and regional features. The import is blocked before anything is written, so your company file is not damaged by the attempt.

What the message actually means

Sage 50 is telling you that the source data and the destination company do not match in country. A Canadian edition file (Simply Accounting heritage) and a US edition file (Peachtree heritage) cannot exchange data through the built-in import, even though both are called Sage 50. The check is usually based on markers inside the data itself, not on where you happen to sit. So the block can also fire when a file was created under one edition and later opened or restored under another.

Why it happens

The most common causes we see are:

What you can safely try first

Confirm which edition is installed on the machine and which edition produced the source data. If the source is a backup, restore it on a machine running the matching edition, then export from there. If the goal is simply to move the books to QuickBooks, the country mismatch inside Sage 50 may not matter at all, because a proper conversion reads the data directly rather than going through the import.

Do not force the import by editing the data by hand. Country markers sit in structural parts of the file, and a mismatched edit can leave the company in a state Sage 50 will not open cleanly.

When the file needs professional attention

If both sides genuinely need to end up in one set of books, or the file will not open in either edition, this is not something the built-in tools can resolve. The data has to be converted at the database level, with the lists, transactions, and tax details remapped to the destination edition. That is work our engineers do routinely, and it depends entirely on the file, so we evaluate each one before quoting.

A useful next step

If your end goal is QuickBooks, see our Sage 50 to QuickBooks conversion service for US files, or our Sage 50 Canada conversion service for Canadian files. If you need to stay in Sage 50 and the file simply will not cooperate, send it to us for a free evaluation and quote. We will tell you what is possible before you commit to anything.
