An unexpected error occurred while either loading or converting your company data

Sage 50 hit a problem it could not describe while opening or upgrading your company file, usually pointing to data corruption or a version mismatch.

When Sage 50 tells you that “An unexpected error occurred while either loading or converting your company data,” the word “unexpected” is doing a lot of heavy lifting. It means the program encountered something in your company file that it could not process, and rather than naming the specific cause, it gave up and displayed a generic catch-all. In practice, this almost always points to one of two things: structural damage inside the file, or a version gap — for instance, trying to open or convert a file from a much older release of Peachtree, Simply Accounting, or Sage 50 into a newer one without the right intermediate steps.

Restore from a known-good backup

If you have a backup from before the error started, this is the safest path. Restore it to a new location and open it in your current Sage 50 installation. If the backup opens cleanly, the original file is damaged and the backup becomes your working copy. If the backup also fails, the problem may be a version or environment issue rather than file corruption.

Try a different Sage 50 release or edition

Sometimes the file itself is intact, but the version of Sage 50 you are using cannot read it — particularly when the file was last saved in an older Peachtree or Simply Accounting release. Installing the version the file was last used with, opening it there, and then running the built-in maintenance tools before attempting the conversion again can resolve the issue. Whether this applies to your situation depends on which version your file was last saved in, and we can help you determine that through a free evaluation.

Run Sage 50’s built-in maintenance and integrity checks

If the file opens at all — even partially — run the maintenance tools under File Maintenance (the exact menu label varies by version and edition). This includes data verification and integrity checks that can catch and sometimes repair index or table-level problems. If the file will not open at all, this option is not available to you, which is itself a strong signal that the file needs professional attention.

When the file needs professional repair

If none of the above works, the file likely has structural damage — corrupted tables, broken indexes, or transaction records that Sage 50 cannot parse — that the built-in tools cannot fix. This is the most common scenario our engineers see with this particular message, and it is not something that can be resolved by reinstalling the software or changing Windows settings. The data itself needs to be repaired at the database level.

We offer a free evaluation and quote for Sage 50 / Simply Accounting database repair. If your goal is to move the data into QuickBooks rather than stay on Sage 50, we also handle Sage 50 to QuickBooks conversions directly from damaged files. Cost and turnaround depend entirely on what is inside your file, which is why we evaluate before quoting. Send us the file and we will tell you exactly what is wrong and what it takes to fix it.
