Advisor Window Tracking engine cannot start because the database version is not recognized

Sage 50 cannot match your company file's database version to the installed program, so a tracking component refuses to start.

You are seeing this message:

Advisor Window Tracking engine cannot start because the database version is not recognized.

Despite the wording, this is not about a missing advisor or a tracking feature you turned on. It means Sage 50 looked at your company file’s internal database and could not match it to the version of the program you are running. The tracking component named in the message is a background part of the software. It refuses to start when the file and the program disagree about what they are.

What the message actually means

Sage 50 stores your books in a database whose structure changes between releases. When the program opens a file, it checks the database version recorded inside it. If that version is newer, older, or damaged enough to be unreadable, some components decline to run. This message is one way that refusal surfaces.

The most common cause is a version mismatch: the file was last opened in a different release of Sage 50 than the one installed now. It can also mean the version marker itself is damaged, which is a data problem rather than an installation problem.

Open the file in the matching release

If the file was last used in a newer release, an older program cannot read it. Check which release the file came from and install that release before trying again. If you are unsure, a recent backup of the file opened in the release that created it is the safest test.

Do not restore a backup over the original until you know the original is unusable. Keep both copies.

Rule out an installation problem

Sometimes the installed program, not the file, is the problem. A repair install of Sage 50, or reinstalling the release you were using, can clear the message if the file itself is healthy. Try this only after confirming the file opens on another machine with the same release. If it does, the fault is local to the installation.

When the file itself is damaged

If the version marker inside the database is corrupted, no reinstall will fix it. The file needs professional repair: the internal structure has to be examined and rebuilt, and that is not something the program can do on its own. Our engineers handle this kind of damage regularly, and we can tell you quickly whether it applies to your file.

A useful next step

Send us the file for a free evaluation. We will confirm whether this is a version mismatch or real damage, and quote the repair before any work starts. If you would rather leave Sage 50 behind, we also convert Sage 50 files to QuickBooks, which sidesteps the damaged component entirely.
