How do I convert Sage BusinessWorks to QuickBooks Online?

There is no direct export path, so the conversion runs through a service that extracts your data and maps it into QuickBooks Online.

Sage BusinessWorks cannot export directly to QuickBooks Online. There is no built-in bridge between the two products, and QuickBooks Online has no import filter for BusinessWorks data. The practical route is a two-step conversion: extract the BusinessWorks data into a form QuickBooks accepts, then load it into QuickBooks Online. Our engineers do this as a service, and it starts with a free evaluation of your file.

What BusinessWorks export limits mean for you

BusinessWorks stores its data in its own database, split across company modules. Its reporting and export tools are designed for spreadsheets and printed reports, not for moving a full set of books. Exporting lists one module at a time by hand gives you names and balances, but it loses the transaction history that ties everything together.

That loss matters. Without history, your comparative reports, customer balances, and vendor totals in QuickBooks Online will not reconcile against prior years. A conversion service works at the database level instead, so the extraction is not limited by what the export screens can reach.

What a conversion service extracts

Our engineers read the BusinessWorks data directly and pull across the pieces QuickBooks Online can hold. That typically covers the chart of accounts, customer and vendor lists, item lists, open receivables and payables, and historical transactions. Exactly how much history carries over depends on your file: its size, its version, and how cleanly the modules were maintained.

Some BusinessWorks structures do not have a one-to-one equivalent in QuickBooks Online. Where that happens, we map to the closest supported structure rather than dropping the data. We confirm those decisions with you before the conversion runs, so nothing is a surprise after the import.

Mapping choices you will need to make

A few decisions shape the result. The main ones are how many years of history to bring across, how BusinessWorks inventory items map to QuickBooks Online item types, and how any payroll history is handled, since QuickBooks Online handles payroll differently from BusinessWorks. If your file is large, trimming the history can also keep the destination company fast and well under QuickBooks Online’s list limits.

You do not need to settle these in advance. Send us the file, and we review it and come back with a proposed mapping and a firm scope. You can start with our Sage BusinessWorks to QuickBooks conversion service page, or contact us about your specific file for a free evaluation and quote.
