Do I need to convert my data when downgrading Sage 50 Quantum to Pro or Premium?

Yes, a Quantum company file must run through a downgrade conversion before Pro or Premium can open it, so back up first.

Yes. Your company data has to be converted when you move from Sage 50 Quantum down to Pro or Premium. Installing the lower edition is not enough on its own; the file must run through a downgrade conversion so Pro or Premium can open it.

Why does the data need converting?

Quantum sits above Pro and Premium in the Sage 50 lineup, and its company files reflect that. Pro and Premium are built to read data at their own level, not above it. The conversion steps the data down so the target edition sees a file it was designed to open. Skipping that step usually ends with the program refusing to load the data at all.

Back up before anything else

Treat the downgrade as a one-way operation. Before anything touches the company data, take a fresh backup and confirm it restores. Keep that backup somewhere separate from the working machine. The reason is simple: the conversion works directly on the file, and you want an untouched copy to fall back on whatever happens next. A backup from last month is not good enough here; make a new one on the day.

What happens if the conversion fails?

This is the risk that catches people out. A conversion that fails partway through, or is interrupted, can leave the company file unusable in either edition. Quantum may no longer recognize the data, and the lower edition never got far enough to open it. The file still exists, but it can sit in a half-converted state that neither program will load. Recovery from that state is often possible, but it is far more work than doing the downgrade on a clean backup in the first place.

How do you run the downgrade safely?

Work on a copy, never the only copy of your data. Run the conversion against that copy with the verified backup behind it. If anything goes wrong, the original is still intact. If you would rather not carry that risk yourself, our engineers handle the whole process; see our Sage 50 Quantum to Pro or Premium downgrade service. Exactly what the step-down means for your data, including anything in the file tied to the higher edition, depends on the file itself, and we assess that file by file.
