Can I convert Sage 50 to QuickBooks Online Advanced or Plus instead of Simple Start?
Yes, your Sage 50 data can be converted into QuickBooks Online Plus or Advanced; the plan choice depends on the features your data needs.
Yes. A Sage 50 conversion does not lock you into QuickBooks Online Simple Start. We can target Plus or Advanced, and for most businesses coming off Sage 50, one of those two is the better fit anyway, because Sage files often rely on features the entry-level plan does not have.
Why the plan choice matters
The QuickBooks Online plans differ mainly in features, not in how data gets imported. The areas that usually decide it:
- Classes and locations. If your Sage 50 file uses departments or segmented reporting, you will want class and location tracking, which is not available on Simple Start. This is the single most common reason Sage 50 customers land on Plus or higher.
- Budgeting and reporting depth. Budgets and fuller reporting options come with the higher plans, and Sage 50 users are often accustomed to both.
- Users and permissions. Advanced supports more users and finer permission control, which matters if several people worked in Sage simultaneously.
- Third-party app integrations. Advanced opens up additional integration and automation options that the lower plans restrict.
How plan choice affects the converted data
The conversion process itself is largely the same regardless of target plan: we extract the lists and history from the Sage 50 file and map them into a QuickBooks Online company. What changes with the plan is what QuickBooks Online will accept and display once the data is there. If your Sage file uses department-level tracking and we convert into a plan without class tracking, that segmentation has nowhere to land, so it either gets folded into accounts or dropped. Choosing the right plan first avoids that. Exactly which fields and histories carry over in your case depends on the file, so we evaluate each one before converting rather than promising a fixed list.
How to decide
A practical approach: look at how you actually used Sage 50. If you relied on departments, job costing detail, budgets, or multi-user access, Plus is the sensible minimum and Advanced is worth considering for heavier reporting and user counts. If your Sage usage was simple, a lower plan may be fine, but it costs nothing to check before committing, because moving a converted company between plans later can mean reworking how the data is organized.
