Can I convert a Sage 50 file set up for multiple companies?

Yes. Each Sage company converts into its own separate QuickBooks company file -- there is no single-file multi-company conversion.

Yes, we can convert a Sage 50 setup that contains multiple companies, but the key thing to understand is that each Sage company becomes its own separate QuickBooks company file. QuickBooks Desktop does not store multiple independent companies inside one file the way some Sage configurations do, so a one-to-one split is the standard approach.

How multi-company Sage 50 works

In Sage 50, what people call a “multi-company file” is typically one of two things: a single Sage installation managing several distinct company datasets, or a single company dataset with multiple divisions or departments tracked through segmentation (for example, department codes or project tracking). These are structurally different, and the conversion path depends on which one you have.

If you have genuinely separate company datasets, each one is converted independently into its own QuickBooks .qbw file. The chart of accounts, vendors, customers, employees, inventory items, and historical transactions for Company A land in one QuickBooks file, and Company B’s data lands in another.

If you have a single Sage company using departments or divisions to separate entities, the data still flows into one QuickBooks file unless you ask us to split it. In that case, we would need to evaluate whether the department-level data can be cleanly separated during conversion, and that depends on how tightly the divisions are intertwined in your transaction history.

Planning for the conversion

Before we start, it helps to decide how you want the end result structured in QuickBooks:

Which lists and transaction types carry over cleanly depends on your specific Sage file, version, and how the data is organized. Rather than guess, we evaluate the file first.

What we recommend

Send us the Sage backup for each company dataset (or the single dataset, if divisions are involved). Our engineers will review the structure, confirm what converts, and map out the plan – whether that is two separate QuickBooks files or one file with class-based division reporting. You can start that evaluation through our Sage 50 to QuickBooks conversion page, and we will provide a free quote based on what your file actually contains.
