Can a Canadian Sage 50 file be converted to US QuickBooks?
Yes, a Canadian Sage 50 file can be converted to US QuickBooks, but GST/HST tax schemes and CAD currency defaults must be mapped first.
Yes. A Canadian Sage 50 file, including one from the Simply Accounting era, converts to a US edition of QuickBooks Desktop or to QuickBooks Online. The records themselves move. What needs planning is everything country-specific: tax schemes and currency defaults decide whether the result is clean or a source of ongoing cleanup.
Taxes are the biggest gap
Canadian files carry GST, HST, and provincial sales tax schemes. US QuickBooks expects US sales tax. Nothing translates between the two automatically, so every Canadian tax code has to be mapped to a destination equivalent before the data moves. The right mapping depends on the file: how many tax codes you use, whether they sit on invoices, bills, or both, and how far back the history goes. Our engineers settle this mapping first. Redoing it after the fact means touching every historical transaction that carries tax.
Currency needs a decision up front
Your file normally defaults to Canadian dollars, and a US company defaults to US dollars. You therefore choose one of three paths before converting: keep CAD as the home currency inside the US edition, restate the books in USD, or enable multicurrency. Treat multicurrency with care. Once it is enabled, QuickBooks offers no switch to turn it back off, and every foreign-currency account gains exchange-rate handling. If a wrong setting does get converted, our QuickBooks multi-currency removal service can undo it, but choosing correctly the first time is far simpler.
Choose the destination first
Desktop or Online changes both decisions above. The two handle sales tax differently, and a later change of country edition or home currency in QuickBooks Online means starting a new company. Decide the target, then let the tax mapping and currency plan follow from it. Switching destinations midway usually means repeating that planning.
What carries over?
Lists, the chart of accounts, and transaction history are the usual scope. How much of that moves cleanly depends on the file: its size, its age, and how consistently it was maintained. We do not guess at it. Each file is evaluated before the work begins, so you know what will move and what needs a decision from you. Our Sage 50 Canada to QuickBooks conversion service page walks through the process and what we need from you.
Start with a free evaluation
Send us the Canadian backup and name the US edition you are targeting. We will review the file and report back what the conversion will include, how the tax codes should map, and which currency setup fits your books. The evaluation is free, and it settles the two decisions that cause the most trouble after a cross-border move.
